MEDICAL SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES
There were nearly 700,000 doctors employed in 2012. While most work in private offices or clinics, an increasing number work in large group practices or hospitals. Many own or co-own private medical practices. Doctors work at least full-time hours. Most spend more than 40 hours a week on the job, including when they are on call for emergencies. They sometimes work overnight.

Chemistry majors stand out from the crowd of mostly biology majors applying for med school.
IIT offers excellent pre-med options, including a pre-med minor, and dual admission programs with Midwestern University's Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Rush Medical College's research-oriented MD program and the Illinois College of Optometry's doctor of optometry program.
A physician, or medical doctor, leads the medical team in caring for patients as the primary healthcare provider. A doctor diagnoses and treats diseases and conditions, as well as provides treatment in many forms including medication, procedures, surgery, or therapy.
The physician shoulders the highest degree of responsibility for coordinating the patient’s medical treatment from beginning to end, analyzing the patient’s symptoms and conditions, and managing his or her care for the best results and recovery.
Some physicians provide general, ongoing preventative care, or management of basic chronic issues such as hypertension or diabetes. Other doctors are more specialized, and treat only certain systems of the body on a more in-depth basis.

PHARMACY SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES
Employment of pharmacists is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2020. This is partly due to an increase in the number of older people who tend to use more medication.
New drugs will be introduced to the market also causing a need for more pharmacists.
In addition, the number of medications individuals are prescribed will call for qualified professionals to make sure they are taken correctly.

PHARMACY SCHOOL EDUCATION
A bachelor's in chemistry is excellent preparation for a pharmacy program; drugs are chemicals, and how they function in the body is chemistry. To become a pharmacist one must earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, known as a Pharm.D.
Pharmacy programs are usually four years long and must be accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). To gain admission one must have at least two years of college study with courses including math, chemistry, biology, physics, humanities and social sciences. Applicants generally have to take the Pharmacy College Admissions Test. Doctor of Pharmacy programs include coursework in pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology (effects of drugs on the body), toxicology and pharmacy administration.
If you're interested in pharmacy school, the Dual Admission—Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program with IIT and Midwestern University's Chicago College of Pharmacy (CCOP) provides a strong academic foundation for students interested in the field.
Pharmacists are health professionals who, in addition to dispensing prescription medication to patients, also provide information about the drugs their doctors have ordered for them.
They explain doctors' instructions to patients so that these individuals can use these medications safely and effectively.

Chemistry professors usually need a Ph.D. in chemistry before teaching at the college level, though some employed at junior colleges may be able to teach with only a bachelor's or master's degree. Those teaching at colleges and universities reported an average annual income of $86,230, while chemistry professors teaching at junior colleges averaged $65,840 per year.
